A new code of conduct was approved on 5/16 amidst high-profile racist and antisemitic hate incidents; that’s a great step in the right direction. However, the BOE has not yet approved a key related policy: Anonymous Reporting.
As of 2020, 26 states have mandated anonymous reporting for all public schools. In our county, Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, and Norwalk already have a system in place.
PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION TODAY AND CALL FOR AN ANONYMOUS REPORTING SYSTEM TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE!
(Westport residents or parents with children in WPS only, please)
RE: I Support Anonymous Reporting
Dear BOE members,
I’m [Your Name], a Westport resident at [Your Street] with kid(s) at [Insert School Name.]
Implementing an anonymous reporting system is an obvious and essential step to keep our kids safe.
Anonymous reporting empowers students and parents to report bullying, identity-based harassment, threats of gun violence, or any other serious concerning behaviors before they escalate without fear of retaliation or social repercussions, keeping our schools safe and protecting the district from legal exposure.
Please include anonymous reporting ASAP on the BOE agenda so we can be well on our way to having an anonymous reporting system up and running for the fall. Without it, we’re needlessly risking the safety of our students and the reputation of our school district.
